Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth (also referred to as ‘third molars’) can become problematic in some patients and require removal. Our experienced oral surgeons have extensive expertise in the dentist removal of wisdom teeth, using minimally invasive techniques to ensure comfort and effective results.
When is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Necessary?
The removal of wisdom teeth by a dentist may be needed if they become impacted or start causing dental infections and decay.
Sometimes, wisdom teeth can be partially erupted through the gum, making them difficult to keep clean. This increases the risk of decay and gum disease around both the wisdom teeth and neighbouring teeth. In such cases, your dentist may recommend wisdom tooth extraction to protect your oral health.
Wisdom teeth are not essential for chewing or biting, and you can enjoy a healthy lifestyle with excellent chewing function without them. However, avoiding timely dentist removal of wisdom teeth can increase the risk of decay in nearby teeth, persistent pain, and infections that may spread to other parts of the mouth and body.
Specialised coronectomy for Wisdom Teeth
A coronectomy is when the oral surgeon leaves the roots behind to avoid damaging the nerve. This reduces the risk of numbness in the cheek, chin, tongue, and gums following wisdom tooth extraction. However, a coronectomy is not suitable if the tooth’s nerve has died or if the tooth is severely decayed.
In some cases, the roots of lower wisdom teeth may be very close to the nerve running along the lower border of the jaw. Here, a coronectomy may be recommended instead of a complete dentist removal of the wisdom tooth.
