What is a White Filling?

A white filling is a type of filling made from composite resin. Once upon a time, the only material used for fillings was metal amalgam. Patients now have a choice between amalgam fillings and discreet tooth-coloured white fillings.

Why should I choose to have a White Filling?

  • Discreet: white fillings don’t show up in your mouth – they blend right in with your tooth shade.
  • Easy Placement: white fillings are adhered directly onto your tooth, which can reduce the time taken to treat you.
  • Conservative: white fillings may not always require any tooth tissue removal, making them much more conservative – this is because they can be bonded directly to your tooth (unlike amalgam fillings, which cannot be placed in this way). However, they are also used to combat the presence of decay; if this is the case, anaesthetic is needed.
  • Confidence: open your mouth to smile or laugh without worrying about anyone noticing your filling.
